The use of alcohol and other psychoactive substances has slowly but rapidly gained acceptance in today’s society. Among the young people,  it is the ‘cool thing’ that crowns almost all social gatherings.

Earlier on in many African communities, alcohol was of choice and for particular occasions. Society had a way for controlling their people groups and ensuring conformity to laid down norms.  Modern society does not discriminate adult and children behavior. It is not strange to find a father and son in the same bar drinking together. Some of these social users of psychoactive substances slowly graduate to abuse and on to addiction.

Addiction is the state when a person becomes totally dependent on a substance psychologically and physically.  They cannot stop consuming even when they know it has negative consequences. Much of their time is spent either , their substance of choice or in search of the next dose hence becoming dysfunctional humans.

According to Wikipedia Addiction is a brain disordercharacterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences.

Addiction deceptively creeps into an individual’s life whilehe or she is smiling ‘ on a high’. In many cases psychoactive substances are taken to mask or escape pain whatever the cause of pain.

Addiction affects the individual, the family and the society.  The individual becomes affected health-wise (mind and body) and socially. He/ she may when they hit rock bottom may end up so frustrated, depressed and some suicidal.

The family becomes disconnected from a loved one and may get into conflict financially and emotionally.

The nation also loses variable workforce when employees become addicted increasing the burden of treatment. It is sad to find a whole professional lying on the streets with no recollection of the direction to their home or their status in society
